The Vision
Hand Technologies is uniquely positioned to capture the technology purchases of the untapped mass market. Hand Technologies combines the power of personal service with the efficiency of the Internet to deliver a revolutionary and better way of marketing PC and Internet-related products and services.
Enabled E-commerce
Hand has a team of independent contractors (Technology Consultants) who work closely with their customers to understand their computing needs and match products to those needs. Hand Technology Consultants (TCs) can offer name-brand products at prices to meet or beat the superstores via their online e-commerce web site. (Hand also offers their own brand of personal computers and notebooks - the VivaPro and VivaBook range). TCs introduce their customers to the Internet, teach them to use technology and ensure that they are familiar with their Hand Technologies web site. The customer subsequently uses the TC's web site as a destination point for information, links, product purchases, online training and other online services. It's an approach that delivers superior customer satisfaction and has been recognized by Computer Retail Week who named Hand Technologies among the Top 10 Retail Innovators in 1998.
Background
Hand Technologies began operations in the US in October 1996. Based in Austin, Texas, they have more than 5000 self-employed Technology Consultants across the US, a number that is increasing month on month. Andrew Harris and Martin Slagter are the founders of Hand Technologies. They, along with Michael Dell, made Dell into one of the top 5 computer companies in the world. Today, their outstanding track record has attracted a superstar team and millions of dollars of investment to Hand Technologies. In May 1997, Hand Technologies raised $6.75 million from a private placement. In February 1999, Federated Department Stores and Fingerhut Companies, Inc. acquired a 19.9% equity interest share in Hand Technologies. Fingerhut Companies is a direct marketing leader and online retailer. Nathan Morton, ex-Chairman and CEO of CompUSA, is active chairman of the Hand Technologies Board of Directors.
"Market Opportunity"
The alliance with Federated and Fingerhut prepares Hand Technologies for massive growth with the opportunity to market technology products and services to a database of 31 million American households, participate in Fingerhut's 500 million annual mailings and offer consumer credit based on Fingerhut's proprietary credit scoring system. The mass market is ready for Hand Technologies strategy. Intelliquest forecasts that 13.5 and 22.9 million homes intend to purchase PC hardware and software respectively over the next twelve months. The same company forecasts that 5.8 million and 6.9 million small businesses will purchase PC hardware and software respectively over the next six months. These numbers suggest there is a massive market of traditional store based retail customers that can be acquired by TCs and then introduced to the Hand e-commerce environments.
